From The Sports Editor

Dave Morgan has been promoted to deputy sports editor of The Times and Randy Harvey, longtime writer and columnist, has become a senior assistant sports editor.

Harvey most recently wrote the Page Two column. That column will now be written by T.J. Simers, Tuesday through Friday, starting today.

In addition, Claire Noland, sports copy desk chief and assistant sports editor, has been promoted to senior assistant sports editor, joining Harvey and longtime senior assistant Mike Kupper at that level. The promotions were prompted by the late spring departures of Rick Jaffe, executive sports editor, and Mike James, senior assistant sports editor, to executive positions at Foxsports.com.

Morgan, 36, has been with The Times since 1985. He is a Pepperdine graduate. Before coming to The Times, he worked at the Contra Costa Times and Richmond Independent in Northern California.

Harvey, 48, began at The Times in 1981 as the Laker beat writer and became the paper’s Olympic columnist after the 1984 Los Angeles Games. After Allan Malamud’s death in 1996, Harvey became the Page Two columnist. He is a University of Texas graduate who also has worked at the Dallas Times Herald, the Chicago Sun-Times and the New York Daily News.

Noland, 35, joined The Times in 1995 from the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Before that, she worked at the Antelope Valley Press and the L.A. Daily News. She is a graduate of Mount St. Mary’s College.

Simers, 49, has been at The Times for 10 years, covering the San Diego Chargers for The Times San Diego edition, and then the Rams. He also has worked at the San Diego Union-Tribune and the Rocky Mountain News.
