Parking Rate to Rise at Flyaway Lot

Airport parking rates will increase this fall under a plan adopted Tuesday that officials say will speed traffic flow and improve parking availability at both Los Angeles International Airport and the Van Nuys Flyaway facility.

The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners approved rate changes effective Oct. 2 that will double the daily $1 fee at the Van Nuys Flyaway.

The increase is designed to discourage non-travelers from using the lot and going to nearby businesses, said Tom Winfrey, airports spokesman. In addition, the lot typically is filled to capacity at the start of extended holiday periods. While plans are underway to expand parking, the higher fees are expected to encourage more travelers to use alternative transportation to get to the Flyaway.

Fees also will be increased at parking structures closest to LAX terminals, encouraging more travelers to use remote lots and free spaces for drivers who currently circle terminal roadways or park at the curb. Rates will increase to $1 per 30 minutes, from the current $3 for two hours. Rates will remain the same at remote lots B and C, where visitors can park free for two hours and use the frequent shuttle service.

“We are trying to change travelers’ parking habits,” said airport department Executive Director Lydia H. Kennard.

The increases are the first at the Flyaway since 1984 and had not been changed for LAX terminal garages since 1990, airport officials said.
