A 31-year-old man, who was burned over most of his body when his car’s interior burst into flames, died Monday morning at Sherman Oaks Hospital’s Grossman Burn Center, authorities said.

William Major of North Hills went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at 11:06 a.m., said Larry Weinberg, a spokesman for the burn center.

Los Angeles Fire Department arson investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire Monday, said spokesman Jim Wells.

Major suffered third-degree burns over 98% of his body when his car caught fire at 11:30 a.m. Sunday near Balboa Boulevard and Superior Street in Northridge, authorities said.

Witnesses reported seeing Major, who was engulfed in flames, get out of a Chevrolet Camaro, authorities said. Bystanders rolled him in blankets to douse the flames.
