IRVINE
Irvine planning commissioners threatened to vote down a new sign for the re-christened Verizon Wireless Amphitheater unless it includes the city’s name.
“The applicant is coming before us to increase the allowed sign limits,” Commissioner Chris Mears said at a meeting Thursday. It is a “very modest request that they use probably less than a few square feet to develop the word ‘Irvine’ on the sign.”
The current proposal includes only the amphitheater’s new name and space for changeable copy announcing upcoming events.
Although city codes limit signs to a maximum of 50 square feet and 6 feet in height, Irvine’s planners said they support the new sign, which would cover 800 square feet and stand at 38 feet.
