Two Premieres Scheduled for Arboretum Concert
Two premiere performances will be played by the California Philharmonic at the Arboretum in Arcadia on Saturday. Victor Vener conducts the first performance of Roger Allen Ward’s “Music for Percussion and Orchestra,” and violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn gives the West Coast concert premiere of the Chaconne for violin and orchestra from John Corigliano’s film score for “The Red Violin.”
Pitcairn will play the unique Stradivarius “red violin”--the title instrument in the film is fictional--in Corigliano’s Oscar-winning score. Ward, the California Philharmonic’s composer in residence, has written his new work specifically for the four solo percussionists of the orchestra. The performance, also including music by James Horner, Respighi and Stravinsky, takes place at 7:30 p.m. at the Arboretum of Los Angeles County, 301 N. Baldwin Ave., Arcadia, just south of the 210 Freeway.
