The Better Substitute for Sugar Is . . . No Sugar

Regarding “Are Your Food Choices Poor? Bring in the Subs” (July 10): The writers suggest switching “from two packets of sugar in coffee every morning to two packets of . . . aspartame.” Instead of replacing sugar with aspartame, I strongly recommend using no sweetener at all and have been without sweeteners for over 20 years. I must admit that at first the coffee tasted different, but I quickly got used to having my coffee straight.

From my own experience, and from the evidence shown in scientific research, I firmly believe that the best alternative to sugar is abstinence.

What do I drink instead of sugary or aspartame-laden soda? I drink plenty of the healthful beverage that doctors tend to recommend--good, plain water.
