The Times’ 1999 region player of the year failed to advance to the CIF-SCGA tournament after finishing in a tie for second last year, but he averaged a school-record 71.9 strokes for 18 holes played and won his second consecutive Marmonte League title by shooting a record seven-under 274 in the four-round tournament. He signed with UCLA.

Montes became Sylmar’s first City Section champion when he shot a three-under 141 in the two-round tournament at Griffith Park. He was the No. 2 finisher from the region in the CIF-SCGA tournament with a par 72 that tied him for 16th.
