Jetliner Makes Emergency Landing After Engine Fails

An American Airlines jetliner flying from Honolulu to Dallas-Ft. Worth made an uneventful emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport early Wednesday after one of its three engines had to be shut down, the airline said.

None of the 294 passengers and crew members on the DC-10 were hurt, an American Airlines spokesman said. The runway was cleared shortly before 1:10 a.m. for the landing.

The pilots shut down the No. 2 engine in the jumbo jet’s tail after the engine “seized,” the spokesman said. The exact cause of the engine failure was not known, he said.

The landing was precautionary, because DC-10s are able to fly on just one engine if necessary, the spokesman said.

The passengers and their luggage were placed on another jetliner that completed the flight without incident.
