Scout Ruling

Although I consider the Boy Scouts’ position that gay people are somehow inherently morally deficient to be deeply ignorant and offensive, I think the Supreme Court made the right decision (“Scouts May Exclude Gay Men, Justices Say,” June 29). Private organizations should indeed have the right to establish rules of membership; after all, it wouldn’t be right to force a gay rights organization to admit a homophobic bigot.

Of course, I now expect and hope that all public institutions, such as schools, that have antidiscrimination policies will immediately terminate all association with the Boy Scouts. And if any Scouting officials make one peep of complaint about that, they will reveal themselves to be hypocrites.
