Fountain Valley Spoils Opener for Santa Margarita
Nathan Hagstrom had 32 kills as Fountain Valley defeated visiting Santa Margarita, 16-18, 16-14, 7-15, 15-11, 15-12, in a nonleague boys’ volleyball game Wednesday.
Santa Margarita, ranked sixth in The Times’ Orange County preseason poll, took a 5-0 lead in the final game, but Fountain Valley stormed back. Tommy Plass had 19 kills and Dana Rubarth had 18 for the Barons (2-0).
John Costigan had 25 kills to lead Santa Margarita (0-1).
In other nonleague boys’ volleyball:
Cypress 3, Estancia 0--Zane Bermundo, a junior outside hitter, had 11 kills and Garrett Massey, a senior setter, had 30 assists for host Cypress (1-0), which swept, 15-10, 15-2, 15-11.
Santa Ana 3, Santiago 0--Mike Medoza had 11 kills for Santa Ana (1-0), which won 15-9, 16-14, 15-13.
Valencia 3, Garden Grove 0--Scott Mazurier had 11 kills and Brian Bartczak had 10 kills and five aces for host Valencia (1-0), which won 15-5, 15-10, 15-7.
In nonleague boys’ golf:
Trabuco Hills 401, Marina 412--Josh Lazar had four birdies and finished with a 74 overall for Trabuco Hills in the opener for both schools.
Villa Park 412, Estancia 467--Todd Saukkola shot a six-over 78 for Villa Park (1-0) and Jason Cassidy shot a 78 for Estancia (0-1) in a match played at Mesa Verde and Strawberry Farms.
In nonleague boys’ swimming:
Tustin 104, El Modena 66--Mike Cavic of Tustin (1-0) won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and also helped the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams place first.
In nonleague girls’ swimming:
Garden Grove 108, Santa Ana Valley 58--Liz Zuliani anchored both the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay and won the 50 and 100 freestyle events for visiting Garden Grove (1-0).
In nonleague boys’ tennis:
Irvine 11, Edison 7--The Vaqueros got a key sweep from Brandon Craig and John Park in doubles.
Playing at No. 2 doubles, Craig and Park swept 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, for Irvine.
Jeff Malawy swept in singles, 6-1, 6-4, 6-0, for host Edison.
Buena Park 13, Katella 5--Craig Corpuz swept in singles, 7-5, 6-2, 6-0, and Stefan Chica and Houston Nguyen swept in doubles, 7-5, 6-1, 6-3, for host Buena Park (1-1).
La Habra 10, Whittier Christian 8--J.J. Tiberg didn’t lose a game in singles, sweeping three sets in helping host La Habra win its opener.
Newport Harbor 12, Costa Mesa 6--Nick Kuhle, a sophomore transfer student who was the top-ranked 14-under player in Nevada in 1999, swept his singles sets, 6-1, 7-6, 6-1, to lead host Newport Harbor (1-0).
Santa Margarita 14, El Dorado 4--Robbie L’amour lost only one game in singles for host Santa Margarita (1-0).
Sunny Hills 10, Cerritos 8--Joseph Kao swept in singles, 7-6, 6-2, 6-0, and Samuel Ueu and Richard Kim swept in doubles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, for Sunny Hills.
University 15, Woodbridge 3--Aaron Yovan, Henry Mak and Jack Li swept in singles for visiting University (1-0).
