Glendale 82, Canyons 73--The No. 9-seeded Vaqueros wiped out a one-point deficit with 2:24 remaining with a 10-0 run to win a second-round game of the Southern California Regionals at Glendale.

Guard Clayton Powdrill, who led Glendale with 19 points, put the Vaqueros ahead for good on a three-point basket with 2:07 remaining.

They didn’t put away the No. 25-seeded Cougars (13-19) until Anthony Ellison of Canyons fouled out on an offensive foul with 47.9 seconds remaining.

Ellison was called for a technical foul after he protested to officials and Glendale’s Nate Johnson made two free throws for a 77-73 lead.

Johnson, who finished with 16 points, made five of six free throws in the final 47.9 seconds.

It was a difficult ending for Coach Lee Smelser of Canyons, who is retiring after 31 seasons as the team’s coach.

“Obviously we didn’t want it to end like this,” Smelser said. “We wanted to win, but so did Glendale and they played better down the stretch than we did.”

Nana Gbewonyo finished with 23 points and Ellison 22 for Canyons.

Glendale visits top-seeded L.A. City (33-2) Saturday.
