Sampson Dominates in Mater Dei Victory
Center Jamal Sampson scored 17 points, had 18 rebounds and blocked eight shots as top-seeded Mater Dei defeated third-seeded Simi Valley, 53-39, on Saturday night to win the Southern Section Division I-A boys’ basketball title at the Arrowhead Pond.
The Monarchs (32-1) won their second consecutive I-A title and their eighth section championship in nine years.
Cedric Bozeman scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds for Mater Dei, which outrebounded Simi Valley, 53-24.
Dustin Villepigue had 13 points for Simi Valley (28-3), which shot only 25%.
In other Southern Section games:
Compton Dominguez 66, Brea Olinda 42--The Dons shut down Brea Olinda’s perimeter game and won their sixth consecutive section championship with the victory in the II-AA final.
Senior guard Steve Moore made all five of his three-point shots and finished with 19 points for Dominguez (31-2). Tyson Chandler had 13 points, six rebounds and six blocks.
Brea Olinda (24-7) made one of 15 three-point shots and 10 of 43 field-goal attempts.
Lakewood Artesia 83, Huntington Beach Ocean View 46--Amaury Fernandez scored 20 points and Jack Martinez had 18 as the top-seeded Pioneers (29-2) rolled to the Division II-A title against the Seahawks (29-3), who committed 29 turnovers.
The victory was Artesia’s third consecutive division title, coming on the heels of two championships in Division I-AA.
Gardena Serra 72, Playa del Rey St. Bernard 58--Guard Doyle Cole scored 26 points as the Cavaliers (16-15), who got into the playoffs by virtue of the section’s 10-win rule, won their second consecutive Division IV-AA title.
Santa Monica Crossroads 63, Orange Lutheran 57--Isaiah Fox had 23 points and 13 rebounds as the Roadrunners (23-9) won the Division IV-A championship.
In a City Section game:
Manual Arts 49, North Hollywood 47--Mario Roberts had two three-pointers and eight of his 20 points in the fourth quarter as the second-seeded Toilers (17-7) won the Invitational title at Loyola Marymount. The Huskies finished 21-8.
GIRLS
Riverside North 65, Fullerton Troy 42--The top-seeded Huskies (27-3) opened the game with a 13-0 run and were led by Keisha Moore’s 26 points in the Division I-A title game at the Long Beach Pyramid.
Laguna Hills 50, Garden Grove Pacifica 45--Megan Aaker scored 22 points as the Hawks (18-13) withstood a comeback by Pacifica (22-8) for the Division II-A title.
Torrance Bishop Montgomery 69, Fullerton Rosary 56--Freshmen Noelle Quinn and Lauren Ervin combined for 42 points for the Knights (25-3), who defeated the defending Division III-A champion Royals (22-10) in the Division III-AA title game.
Cerritos Valley Christian 46, Morro Bay 45--Susie Boogard made a free throw with 1.7 seconds remaining to give the second-seeded Crusaders (24-6) their ninth title in a victory in the Division IV-AA final against the top-seeded Pirates (19-7).
Pilgrim 53, Hemet Baptist Christian 43--Amber Cunningham scored 22 points and had eight rebounds as the top-seeded Patriots (27-2) won the Division V-A title against the Warriors (20-2).
In a City Section game:
Franklin 46, Marshall 32--Erika Estrella had 13 points and 17 rebounds for the Panthers (16-12) in the Invitational title game at Loyola Marymount. Marshall finished 15-13.
