BOYS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS
In other games:
Westchester 74, Chino Hills Ayala 56--Keith Everage scored 20 points for the Comets (24-6), who had four players in double figures in the victory at Loyola Marymount.
Brandon Heath scored 14 points, Jason Breland 13 and Chad Bell 11 for Westchester, which will meet top-seeded Mater Dei in a semifinal Friday night.
“Everybody played hard,” said Bell, who also had seven rebounds and three blocked shots. “We knew we had to dominate the middle and we did, getting a lot of points, rebounds and blocks down there.”
The Comets outrebounded Ayala, 34-23, and experienced only one lapse, when the Bulldogs (28-6) charged from a 42-24 third-quarter deficit to within 53-43 at the end of the third.
Ayala shooting guard Marc McCoy, one of five senior starters, scored 10 of his 16 points in that period.
Ayala pulled to within 53-45 on D.J. Lucas’ 10-foot baseline jumper, but Ayala was never closer than eight points and Westchester closed on a 9-0 run to make the outcome more one-sided.
