Alleged Leader of Drug Gang Arrested in Tijuana
TIJUANA, Mexico — Police have arrested one of Mexico’s most-wanted drug trafficking suspects, a Mexican news agency reported Saturday.
Jesus Labra, an alleged leader of the Arrellano Felix drug gang, was captured at noon Saturday on a street in downtown Tijuana in an operation that involved the Mexican army and federal police, the Notimex news agency reported.
The Tijuana-based gang is considered by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency to be one of the largest and most violent operating in Mexico. One of the Arrellano Felix brothers, Ramon, is on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List, and federal authorities have offered a $2-million reward for information leading to his arrest.
Although neither Mexico’s attorney general nor the army had made any comment on Labra’s arrest by late Saturday, Notimex reported that Labra family attorney Gustavo Galvez Reyes confirmed his arrest.
Further details on the arrest and charges were not immediately available.
In a recent profile of Labra, the Mexico City daily Reforma said that he owned several hotels and nightclubs south of Tijuana and that he was a leading figure in the Arrellano Felix gang.
In a separate profile last year, the newspaper said that some investigators believed Labra had risen to the top of the drug organization.
