Voters Say No to Speedier Initiatives

Voters in Switzerland, which accounts for an estimated half of the world’s national ballot questions, overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to speed up their system of direct democracy. In nationwide balloting, voters also threw out proposals to halve road traffic, ban in vitro fertilization and introduce quotas for women in parliament and other public jobs. The referendum initiative, backed by the political right, would have imposed a 12-month limit between the time a petition is submitted to the government and the actual referendum.
