Dallas Hires Del Harris as Defensive Coach

The Dallas Mavericks hired former Laker coach Del Harris on Monday as defensive coordinator, a new position. The move reunites Harris with Maverick Coach Don Nelson. Harris was an assistant to Nelson with the Milwaukee Bucks before replacing him before the 1987-88 season.

The Lakers fired Harris 12 games into last season.

San Antonio Spur forward Sean Elliott was activated from the injured list and is expected to play tonight against Atlanta at the Alamodome, seven months after undergoing a kidney transplant. Meanwhile, the Spurs placed guard Terry Porter on the injured list because of a sprained knee ligament. Porter has missed the past four games. . . . A New York judge signed an order of protection that requires Charlotte Hornet forward Anthony Mason to stay away from two men with whom he scuffled outside a Harlem bar. . . . The Phoenix Suns signed former UCLA star Don MacLean to a 10-day contract and placed Tom Gugliotta on the injured list because of torn knee ligaments. MacLean, who has played with six NBA teams and averaged 11.6 points, was released by Houston during the preseason.
