The city has won an award of excellence from the California Parks and Recreation Society for park planning, and especially for building the Box Canyon Park on Foxtail Drive.
A local group, Friends of Box Canyon Park, raised $150,000 and gathered 1,500 volunteers to build a playground in the 4.5-acre lot that was used mostly as an illegal dump.
City Parks and Recreation Director Steve Rudometkin will receive the award on behalf of the city at a conference in Ontario, where he will also speak on the community efforts taken to build Box Canyon Park.
