Special Plates
Re “Senator Hopes to Decelerate Move to Special License Plates,” March 26:
I think that state Sen. Betty Karnette has forgotten just whom she represents. Personally, I would rather see her working on a sound wall for the 91 Freeway, or a way to help us out with gasoline taxes, rather than her self-serving crusade to get the CHP involved in the special-interest license plates.

All that Karnette is asking for in her bill dealing with special-interest license plates is that self-expression and fund-raising take a back seat to public safety. It’s beyond question that some special plates’ graphics reduce the ability of law enforcement to identify cars and check their registration status.
People unhappy with this restriction have a simple alternative: Motorists who want to inform others of their beliefs can use bumper stickers, and organizations that want to advertise their causes and raise money can sell them the stickers.
