Relay Victories Are the Key for Laguna Hills
With key victories in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, second-ranked Laguna Hills was able to hold off third-ranked Newport Harbor to win, 95-75, in Sea View League girls’ swimming Wednesday.
While both teams were competing without some of their top swimmers, who are away at Senior Nationals in Federal Way, Wash., Laguna Hills was led by Katina Economides, who won the 50 and 100 freestyle and was on the winning 400 free relay team.
Nicole Mackey won the 200 individual medley (2:07.53) and the 200 freestyle (1:28.22) for Newport Harbor (1-2, 0-2).
In Century League girls’ swimming:
No. 10 Canyon 86, No. 8 Foothill 84--Canyon’s 400 freestyle relay team of Lauren Volcan, Sheva Khalafbeigi, Lauren Mathewson and Erin Volcan swam a county-best time of 3:38.79 to win the event and the meet.
Erin Volcan had a county-best time of 52.2 in the 100 freestyle and the third-best county time in the 200 freestyle (1:53.9).
Mathewson turned in the second-best county time in the 100 backstroke (59.53).
Ashlee Henson of Foothill (2-2, 1-1), registered the fifth-best county time in the 50 freestyle (24.71).
Villa Park 89, El Modena 81--The meet was determined in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, when the host Spartans (3-2, 1-1) finished in 3:50.23, nine seconds ahead of El Modena (3-2, 1-1). Sophomore Keegan Konecny recorded Southern Section Division I qualifying times in the 50 (25.88) and 100 (56.75) freestyles.
In Sea View League boys’ swimming:
No. 3 Newport Harbor 101, Laguna Hills 68--Ryan Lean posted the county’s fastest time in the 500 freestyle. Lean’s time of 4:41.83 eclipsed the mark he set two weeks ago by almost three seconds. Lean also won the 200 individual medley (2:06.09).
In Golden West League golf:
Tustin 180, Capistrano Valley Christian 229--Sophomore Matt Isaacson shot a three-under round of 33, including an eagle on the par-five second hole and two birdies, for host Tustin (10-2, 1-0). Isaacson sank a six-foot putt on his third shot to register the eagle at Tustin Ranch.
In the Serra League:
No. 1 Santa Margarita 182, Bellflower St. John Bosco 239--Steve Conway shot a two-under round of 34, with an eagle on the par-five, 502-yard sixth for host Santa Margarita (9-0, 2-0), at Coto de Caza South.
