Arkansas Prep Takes a Spin on Homer Cycle
Talk about hitting for the cycle!
Robbie Smart, a catcher for Newport (Ark.) High, hit a solo home run, a two-run homer, a three-run homer and a grand slam in a 27-7 victory over Bald Knob on Friday.
It’s not really a record, but an Arkansas prep official said there is no category for such a feat in the national record book.
The national mark for home runs in one game is six.

Trivia time: Who holds the record for three-point shots made in a men’s Final Four game?
*
Strange group: Bernie Lincicome in the Chicago Tribune: “This is hardly anyone’s dream Final Four, more a hallucination, really.
“Wisconsin, Michigan State, North Carolina, Florida. Reads like the list of candidates for the Citrus Bowl.”

Way out: The most off-the-wall suggestion the San Francisco Giants have received for new Pacific Bell Park was from a man who wanted a “floating stadium.” He said the city was such a tough place to park, you could have a stadium at Pier 42 one day and Pier 36 another day.
Said Tom FitzGerald of the San Francisco Chronicle: “The idea went over like ‘Tommy Lasorda Day.’ ”

Forever friends: Jerry Greene in the Orlando Sentinel: “You know, I interviewed Hollywood Henderson many times when he was a Dolphin. He was always my favorite. Maybe I should give a call to my best buddy, Hollywood. Just to see what’s new.”
What’s new, of course, is Henderson winning $28 million in the Texas state lottery.
What are the odds? Tony Niehaus had just made a hole in one at the sixth hole of the Lake Macbride Golf Course in Solon, Iowa, on Sunday, but he didn’t have long to savor it.
While preparing to tee off on the seventh hole, he heard screaming from the green behind him. Another golfer, John Nash, had repeated his feat on the 172-yard hole.

Fast life: Richard Williams, on the possibility that daughter Venus may retire from tennis at 19:
“Why wait until you’re 27 to retire? No one gives a damn about you when you get that old. People are waiting for the next 14-year-old girl to bring excitement.”

FYI: USC, celebrating its centennial track and field season, will play host to Louisiana State, Nebraska and North Carolina in a four-way men’s and women’s meet Saturday at Cromwell Field.

Trivia answer: Freddie Banks of Nevada Las Vegas made 10 in a semifinal game against Indiana in 1987.
He attempted 19, also a Final Four record.

And finally: Joe Mullaney, the former Laker and Providence coach who died recently, claimed credit for the Boston Celtic dynasty because:
“The first thing Red Auerbach did when he became coach was put me on waivers to make room for the Cooz [Bob Cousy],” Mullaney once said.
