Al Gore trumpeting campaign reform is analogous to a successful burglar advocating the installation of alarm systems (“Gore to Pitch Huge Campaign Reform Effort,” March 27).

I thought the entire purpose of crucifying Richard Nixon was to make the politicians understand that they are not above the law. How naive of me. When it comes to honesty and integrity, the Democrats are no longer pure.

Gore, America’s very busy, plagiaristic inventor of all things important, who can’t obey existing campaign finance laws, is now proposing to invent a whole bunch of new ones. Just who does he think he’s kidding? Come to think of it, maybe all those who are gullible enough to continue supporting him.

I think Gore’s ideas about campaign finance reform might work if two things happen. The first is the free use of the airwaves for all candidates. Come on, network leaders! You’ve been allowed to grow into wealthy organizations, wielding worldwide power, because the people of this country have given you rights to use the public airwaves for a pittance. We want something back from you. Please help us take money out of the election equation and replace it with ideas, which you are so adept at delivering.

The second may be even more painful to the networks. They need to refuse private money for TV election advertising. Let private money be put into public forums where all candidates are represented equally, where ideas and positions are discussed and clarified, where John Q. Public once again has a shot at being heard.

Our society needs bold moves to free us all from the corrupting and controlling power of money in our democratic process. I know I speak for many others in asking that the initiative come from media leaders rather than our overly politicized and overly compromised Congress.

So, Gore explained to students in Cincinnati how to hypnotize a chicken (March 27). Great! But can he spell “potato-e”?
