Boy Hurt in Crash Undergoes Surgery
A 10-year-old Sun Valley boy remained in critical condition Thursday and his teenage brother remained stable a day after their Ford Explorer collided with an MTA bus, officials said.
The unidentified younger boy underwent surgery Wednesday night for a ruptured bladder and remained in intensive care at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles on Thursday, said hospital spokesman Steve Rutledge.
The boy was on a respirator and remained unconscious. He suffered multiple pelvic fractures, a broken rib and lung contusions in addition to the bladder injury, Rutledge said.
His 16-year-old brother, the Explorer’s driver who was identified by Burbank police as Angel Felix, remained in stable condition at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, hospital spokeswoman Tiffany DeVall said.
Both brothers were injured at about 3 p.m. Wednesday when the maroon Explorer, traveling north on Buena Vista Street, allegedly ran a red light at the Empire Avenue intersection, according to witnesses.
An MTA bus westbound on Empire struck the Explorer, police said. Paramedics took nine people from the bus to area hospitals with minor injuries, police said.
The bus, which was headed to Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar, was carrying 25 passengers.
The accident is under investigation, Burbank Police Lt. Bob Giles said.
