The Russian women’s water polo team got a goal in the final minute and defeated the United States, 6-5, to win the Olympic qualifying tournament at Palermo, Sicily. Both squads had already clinched berths to Sydney by winning semifinal matches Saturday.

The U.S. men’s water polo team, needing to win by at least six goals to remain in contention at the Croatian Cup, defeated Australia, 12-6, but finished second when another result didn’t go its way.

The U.S. also needed Italy to beat Croatia Sunday, but that game ended in a 7-7 tie and the U.S. finished second to host Croatia at Dubrovinik, Croatia.

Corona del Mar graduate Chris Oeding put the U.S. ahead, 1-0, and the lead had stretched to 6-2 by halftime. UC Irvine graduate Dan Hackett made seven saves in goal.

Michael Hilde, Kristin Littell and Tiffany Manning of the Mission Viejo Nadadores won titles at the Western Junior National Diving Championships at USC. Hilde finished first in the boys’ 14-15 three-meter final (451.20), Littell won the girls’ 14-15 one-meter final (367.65) and Manning won the girls’ 16-18 one-meter final (385.10).
