Student Protesters, Colleges Reach Pact

CLAREMONT —  Student protesters from the Claremont Colleges reached an agreement with faculty this week and abandoned the Pomona College administration building they were occupying to demand better working conditions for cafeteria staff.

As part of a two-year struggle with the colleges’ administrations and food contractor, Aramark Corp., the students first locked themselves in a building at Pitzer College, preventing the president from entering her office. On Monday, they switched venues and locked themselves to Alexander Hall at Pomona College, with U-locks securing their necks to the doors.

On Tuesday afternoon, Pomona College President Peter Stanley signed a statement of shared principles “regarding a unionization through a process that is timely, publicly accountable, and non-intimidating.”
