Senators Seek Panel on Social Security
Republican Sen. John McCain joined with two Senate Democrats to propose insulating Social Security from election-year politics by creating a bipartisan commission to reach a compromise on changes. Social Security has become a contentious issue on the presidential campaign trail, with Democrat Al Gore attacking Republican George W. Bush’s support for diverting some Social Security taxes into private investment accounts for workers. The commission envisioned by McCain and his Democratic collaborators, Sens. Bob Kerrey of Nebraska and Daniel Patrick Moynihan of New York, would be directed to consider the proposals of both presidential candidates.
