HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP
In other City Championship quarterfinals:
Taft def. University, 15-13, 15-6, 15-11--Middle blocker Mike Gledhill had 13 kills, 12 digs and six blocks for the top-seeded Toreadors (15-0) at Taft.
Bryan Capper chipped in with 12 kills and 18 digs, and Masood Noorzay had seven kills and 22 digs for the defending City champions.
“This was the best team we’ve played since Grant in the [nonleague] season,” said Coach Doug Magorien of Taft. “It’s nice to see we can be resilient like that.”
The Toreadors haven’t lost a game in match play since the semifinals last season against Poly. University finished 9-6.
After having their problems against the Warriors in the first game, Taft breezed through the last two games.
Behind Gledhill and Capper, the Toreadors opened leads of 11-1 in the second game and 10-1 in the third game.
“In the second game, we were just deflated,” Coach Neal Newman of University said. “The kids were down. They made errors that they normally wouldn’t make.”
