Coco’s/Carrows

The Irvine-based restaurant chain Coco’s reported relatively flat income for the first quarter, while sister chain Carrows logged a hefty increase.

The chains are owned by Advantica Restaurant Group, which has put them up for sale.

Coco’s, which owns 146 bakery-oriented coffee shops and licenses and/or franchises 336 more, said first-quarter operating income remained unchanged at $5.5 million as sales increased 1.5% to $55.6 million. Sales at company-owned stores open at least a year--a key measure of growth--were up 3.3%.

Carrows, which owns 117 dinner houses and franchises 28 others, said first-quarter operating income rose 36% to $3.4 million. But sales at Carrows fell 2.8% to $39.1 million. Same-stores sales were up 0.2%.
