Myvett Commits to Northridge

Gene Myvett, an All-Southern Section guard from Littlerock High, has committed to Cal State Northridge.

Myvett, a 6-foot-5 senior, averaged 25.6 points, 8.7 rebounds and 5.4 steals. He was a two-time All-Valley selection by The Times.

Myvett helped Littlerock win its first playoff game in any sport last season.

* Andrew Moore, a top junior guard at Crespi who considered transferring to either Notre Dame or Thousand Oaks, has decided to return for his senior year, Coach Dick Dornan said.

* Jeff Fauver has resigned after six seasons as girls’ basketball coach at Fillmore High.

Fauver guided the Flashes to three Tri-Valley League championships and two appearances in the Southern Section semifinals.

* Kameelah Purdom, a two-time All-Western State Conference forward at College of the Canyons, has signed with Northridge. The Highland High graduate averaged 14.3 points and 8.3 rebounds for two seasons with the Cougars.

FOOTBALL

* Spring practice began Monday for Southern Section teams, and there’s a new look at several schools: head gear.

A Sylmar-based company, Playmaker, has begun producing a protective device that players can wear during touch football passing competitions to reduce the possibility of lacerations and concussions.

Westlake Coach Jim Benkert said he will have all his players wearing the head gear during passing league competitions. The device was approved last year by the Southern Section.

“It looks like an old leather football helmet,” said Scott Morris, a vice president for Playmaker. “It protects the ears, the front of the head and the back of head.”

The head gear costs $29.95.

* Outfielder Jon Shepard of Westlake has committed to Gonzaga.

SOCCER

* Chris Jack, a three-year varsity starter at Thousand Oaks High, has committed to Ohio Wesleyan.

MOTORSPORTS

* Palmdale native Ron Hornaday Jr. finished 20th, one lap behind winner Tim Fedewa, in the Busch 200 NASCAR Busch series race at Loudon, N.H., on Saturday.

Hornaday is fifth in the points standings and leads Kevin Harvick of Bakersfield, 145-135, in the rookie of the year points standings.

* Cory Kruseman of Ventura was fourth and Troy Rutherford of Ojai was fifth in the 30-lap Sprint Car Racing Assn. main event at Ventura Raceway on Saturday night.
