Barber Rallies for Second in Northern Regional Golf

Tommy Barber of Notre Dame High recovered from a rough start to shoot a three-under-par 68 and place second in the Southern Section Northern regional individual golf tournament at The Montecito Country Club in Santa Barbara on Monday.

Barber, who has signed with Long Beach State, bogeyed the first hole he played--the par-four No. 10--but birdied the par-five 11th before shooting par for the next seven holes.

He followed that with three birdies and six pars on holes 1-9 to finish two strokes behind winner Blake Brown of Atascadero.

“He just played solid,” Notre Dame Coach John Skeese said of Barber. “He really wasn’t that far from shooting a 63 or 64.”

Barber, among three golfers to shoot a two-under-par 70 in the Northern regional team tournament at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai on May 8, led 13 players from the region who placed among the top 24 finishers to advance to the section championships at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs on Monday.

Freshman Anthony Kim of Campbell Hall placed third at 71. Brian Edick of Hart, Mark Modglin of Simi Valley, Jeff Osborn of Flintridge Prep and Mike Paglialonga of Atascadero tied for fourth at 72.

Justin Ohye of Calabasas was one of two players to shoot 73. Roy Moon of Royal and Ali Siam of Viewpoint tied for 10th at 74.

Tommy Hajduk of Nordhoff, Brian O’Flaherty of Westlake, Zack King of Ventura, Chris Gray of Rio Mesa and James Logeman of Oak Park were notable non-qualifiers from the region.

Hajduk, O’Flaherty and King were among 12 players who tied for 18th at 76, but they were eliminated in the sudden-death playoff for the final seven spots.

Freshman Sean King of Ventura, Zack’s younger brother, was among the seven qualifiers who shot 76.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Poly 11, Verdugo Hills 1--Joseph Hampel threw a five-hitter and Zack Sims had four hits and four runs batted in for the host Parrots in a Sunset Six League game that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Hampel struck out five and walked one as Poly (20-7, 12-3) tied Grant for the league title. The Parrots will get the league’s automatic berth in the City Championship playoffs because they won the three-game series against Grant, 2-1.

Miguel Gomez had three hits and two RBIs for Poly.

Grant 8, North Hollywood 2--Jose Munoz had three hits and Michael Marble hit his first home run of the season, helping the Lancers clinch a tie for the Sunset Six League title at Grant.

Larry Brown (6-3) threw a six-hitter for Grant (17-9, 12-3), which will need an at-large berth to get into the City Championship playoffs.

Canoga Park 9, Hollywood 5--Chris Lugo went four for four with two RBIs and Jimmy Roberts homered, doubled and had two RBIs for the Hunters (2-15, 2-13) in a Sunset League victory at Hollywood.
