Internet Sales Tax
Gee, every book I’ve ordered from Amazon.com (and indeed every item I’ve purchased over the Internet) has been delivered by trucks on roads that come to my home. Devon Showley (letter, May 17) asserts that since “electrons are free” products ordered from a computer should be exempt from sales tax, as if the process doesn’t depend on an infrastructure.
Well then, shouldn’t items ordered over the telephone for delivery also be exempt? Are we taxing the means of purchase or the item itself? I believe in a sales tax on all sales.
