In Rare Display, Woods Blows Lead
One bad shot sank Tiger Woods Sunday in the Deutsche Bank Open at Alveslohe, Germany, near Hamburg. And for only the second time he failed to win a tournament that he led after 54 holes.
England’s Lee Westwood finished in front by three strokes while Woods settled for a third-place tie, ending a streak of 16 events that he had won after leading through three rounds. The last time he failed to win under those circumstances was the 1996 Quad City Open.
Woods lost the lead Sunday when his second shot on the 11th hole landed in the water, leading to a double bogey.
Woods finished at 277 with a two-under 70 at the $2.3-million event, Europe’s third-richest prize.
Westwood had the tournament’s best round, an eight-under 64, to finish at 15-under 273. Italy’s Emanuele Canonica was second at 276.
Woods, reportedly paid $1 million to defend his title, helped draw 62,000 spectators, about 20,000 more than the last time the event was held in Alveslohe two years ago.

Phil Mickelson overcame a six-stroke deficit with a closing seven-under-par 63 to win the Colonial at Fort Worth, Texas, and join Woods as a three-time winner on the PGA Tour this season.
Mickelson had eight birdies, including a 20-footer on the 18th hole, to end with a 12-under 268, two strokes ahead of Stewart Cink and Davis Love III.
Cink got in trouble on the 15th hole when his drive hit a tree, and then he three-putted the 17th.

Annika Sorenstam birdied three of the final four holes to shoot a 66 and win the Firstar LPGA Classic at Beavercreek, Ohio, but it was Karrie Webb who provided most of the excitement.
Leading the tournament by a stroke at the par-five eighth hole, Webb was penalized two strokes for swinging at and striking the sand after her first bunker shot trickled back into the trap. Rules do not permit players to touch the ground with a club in a bunker or hazard.
Webb finished the hole with a triple-bogey eight.
On the closing hole, Webb hit a nine-iron from 131 yards into the cut for an eagle. It would have forced a playoff had Sorenstam not birdied the 18th.

At the TD Waterhouse Championship senior event in Kansas City, Mo., Dana Quigley rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole for a dramatic one-stroke victory over Tom Watson, a Kansas City native and crowd favorite.
Watson was waiting to tap in a 12-inch birdie putt for a final-round 63. But Quigley coolly holed his 12-footer for a six-under 66 and an 18-under 198 total on the Tiffany Greens course.
