* Matt Harrington of Palmdale High has been selected the Gatorade player of the year in California.

The right-handed pitcher and designated hitter is a finalist for national player of the year.

* Rich McKeon, coach at Taft since 1988, has resigned.

McKeon’s best team was in 1993, when the Toreadors, led by Stacy Kleiner and Gabe Kapler, advanced to the City Section semifinals.

The Toreadors were 3-23 this season.

VOLLEYBALL

* Middle blocker Mike Gledhill of Taft High was selected City Section most valuable player.

Gledhill, a 6-foot-6 senior, led the Toreadors to their second consecutive City title.

He shared the award last season with Rob Nielson of Palisades.

Gledhill, who has committed to Pepperdine, helped Taft finish with a 17-0 record.

Outside hitters Bryan Capper and Masood Noorzay, and setter Andrew Reback of Taft were All-City selections.

Ron Roiz of Grant, Adam Ghoniem of Granada Hills and Ivan Cuevas of Poly also made the team.

SOFTBALL

* Gil Mendoza has resigned after two seasons as women’s coach at Moorpark College.

Mendoza led the Raiders to second place in the Western State Conference and an appearance in the the Southern California Regional earlier this month.
