FRESNO, Calif. — An allergist was indicted this week on a fraud charge alleging that he falsified research on a new nasal spray for children.
Dr. William Ziering, 69, was charged with mail fraud in reporting results, allegedly without having personally examined all of his research subjects or performed the necessary tests in the study, prosecutors said.
Ziering was working for the pharmaceutical company Rhone-Poulenc Rohrer as a clinical investigator on a nasal spray for children with grass allergies. Ziering’s results were not reported in data submitted to the Food and Drug Administration for approval of the drug.
Ziering could not be reached for comment.
If convicted, he faces as much as five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
