Italian Master Cimabue’s ‘Madonna’ in Sotheby’s Preview
“The Madonna and Child Enthroned With Angels,” a small painting by 13th century Italian master Cimabue, will be the highlight of a pre-auction exhibition at Sotheby’s in Beverly Hills, Wednesday and Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The 10-by-8-inch painting hung in Benacre Hall, near Lowestoft, England, for more than a century, but it was only recently identified as the work of Cimabue, who was a major figure in the development of early Italian art.
Valued at about $3 million, the painting is the first work by Cimabue ever to come to auction.
It will go on the block July 6 at Sotheby’s in London.
The exhibition also includes a variety of Old Master drawings and paintings, and medieval illuminated manuscripts consigned to upcoming auctions.
