SANTA ANA
The 10th annual Juneteenth Celebration, sponsored by the NAACP, will be at Lillie King Park on June 17.
The holiday is observed by thousands of African Americans, especially in the South and in Texas, where it is a state holiday. The celebration originated from the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by President Abraham Lincoln in September 1862 and effective Jan. 1, 1863. The news did not reach slaves in Texas until June 1865.
