* Christian Perez of men’s soccer and Laura Szymanski of women’s volleyball have been selected Cal State Northridge athletes of the month for September.

Perez, a senior goalkeeper from Moorpark, helped the Matadors to a 4-5 record with three shutouts, including 1-0 victories at home over St. Mary’s and California. He leads the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Pacific Division with 55 saves.

Szymanski, a junior from Berlin, Germany, helped Northridge to a 9-3 record, its best since opening 8-2 in 1997. She leads the Matadors in hitting percentage (.288) and aces (16) and was second in kills (215) and kills per game (4.39).

Others nominated were Deedee Jimison of women’s soccer, Alexis Cormier of women’s volleyball, Bruce Molock of football and Charles Mitchell of men’s soccer.

BASKETBALL

* Registration is underway for the Conejo Recreation and Park District adult recreation leagues.

Games will be Sunday-Thursday beginning Nov. 30 and running through April.

Entry fee is $368 per team in the Conejo district and $42 for out-of-district teams.

Players must be 16 or older. Games will be played at Borchard and Thousand Oaks community centers and Newbury Park High.

BIATHLON

* The Great Pumpkin Smash Biathlon will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 28 at Lake Hughes Community Club.

The event, sponsored by the High Desert Biathlon Club, features an eight-kilometer (approximately five miles) course.

Biathletes shoot .22 caliber rifles at 10 targets from a distance of 25 meters (82 feet). The first five targets are shot from a prone position, the second five from a standing position.

For each target missed, a biathlete must run a 100-meter penalty lap before proceeding on the course. Rifles and ammunition will be supplied.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three men and women, as well as in age groups for men and women. Beginners are welcome. All participants must take part in a safety and familiarization clinic beginning at 8:30 a.m.

There will also be an air-rifle event open to all ages at 10:30 a.m.

Registration is underway. Cost is $15 until Oct. 21, $18 after or if registering on-line.
