Funds for Charities
* Re Joe Eszterhas’ open letter to Hollywood political donors, Aug. 29: I agree that Hollywood moguls should withhold or terminate donations to the Democratic National Committee and to the Gore/Lieberman ticket. Not because of candidate Joseph Lieberman’s past comments on the excessive and often gratuitous violence and sex in movies and television programs. Not because of Eszterhas’ view that Lieberman has issued “veiled” threats to creative freedom of expression. After all, Hollywood has, in fact, become all too adept at creating, packaging and selling entertainment product that is destructive to kids and families. So, Hollywood is guilty as Lieberman has charged for many years.
I suggest that Hollywood terminate political contributions and redirect those same dollars to charities here and in other states, as the money is badly needed. Donate those big bucks to medical charities, to nonprofit hospitals, to housing groups, to farm aid groups and similar organizations rather than to political campaigns that will spend those donations on media commercials, print ads and polling. Cancel political campaign contributions and the fund-raisers and redirect those donations to charity.

Helllooo . . . This from Eszterhas, who brought us such great family fare as “Showgirls” and “Basic Instinct”? The screenwriter who has patently shown us the worst violence and disregard for women? He has it wrong. What the politicians probably meant was to boycott/censor Eszterhas.
