Watercolorist Timothy J. Clark--”one of the best painters in California,” according to Jean Stern, executive director of the Irvine Museum--was one of the few Orange County painters doing plein-air work in the early 1970s. Clark’s search for landscapes has since taken him to Europe many times, and the fruit of his Italian trips can be seen in “Bellosguardo” (beautiful view), a collection of oils and watercolors. At Bowers Museum of Cultural Art through Sept. 17, the exhibit features images of Sicily, Venice and Lake Como. The award-winning artist has displayed his work at Mission San Juan Capistrano Museum and at the Parker Ranch Art Museum in Kamuela, Hawaii.

* “Bellosguardo,” the Gumbiner Center at the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art, 2002 N. Main St., Santa Ana. (714) 567-3600. Sept. 7-17. 10 a.m.-4 p.m., except Mondays. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students and children ages 5-12.
