BASEBALL

* Catcher Robert Fick of the Detroit Tigers, formerly of Newbury Park High, Ventura College and Cal State Northridge, was hit in the hip by a batting practice pitch thrown by Vice President Al Gore.

Gore threw batting practice before the Tigers met the Angels on Wednesday in Detroit.

BASKETBALL

* Devin Montgomery, a former All-Southern Section guard from Alemany who played at Duquesne last season as a freshman, has transferred to Moorpark College.

* Registration for the fall session of the ARC Instructional Basketball Academy for boys and girls in grades 1-12 will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at North Hollywood High and at 1 p.m. at Pierce College. Tryouts for the ARC traveling teams in grades 3-8 will be held Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. at North Hollywood.

GYMNASTICS

* The 34th Senior Olympic Gymnastics Meet is set for Sept. 24 at Valley College.

Medals will be awarded for first through sixth places in men’s and women’s age-group competition. Entry fee is $10 for the first event and $5 for each other event. If a participant is entering only for exhibition, it is $2 per event.

Events include rope climb, tumbling, floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar for men and rope climb, tumbling, floor exercise, vault, uneven parallel bars and balance beam for women. There will also be an all-around title (any four Olympic events).
