Jury Recommends Death for Robber Who Killed Deputy
SANTA ANA — A jury Thursday recommended the death penalty for a gang member who gunned down an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy during the robbery of a hair salon in Buena Park.
Kevin Boyce, 29, glared at the jury as the verdict was read, then shouted, “May Allah kill you all, pagans, infidels! You all made a dumb move.”
The startled jurors were quickly escorted out of the courthouse.
As the verdict was read, Jennifer Parish, the fiancee of slain Deputy Shayne York, gasped and began to cry. She is also a Los Angeles sheriff’s deputy, and was lying next to York when he was killed.
York, 26, was shot inside De’Cut hair salon, where he and Parish had stopped before a Las Vegas vacation. York was in the barber’s chair when two robbers burst into the salon and ordered employees and customers to lie on the floor.
Boyce found York’s badge while going through the deputy’s wallet. After obtaining the password to York’s bank card and snarling slurs like “white pig,” witnesses said, Boyce shot the deputy in the back of the head.
The robbers snatched Parish’s engagement ring before fleeing.
Boyce and Andre Willis, the other suspect, allegedly made a withdrawal with York’s ATM card, then robbed a pizza parlor in Yorba Linda. Police stopped them on the Riverside Freeway.
Willis awaits trial.
