Yankees Finish Sweep of Red Sox
Scott Brosius hit a two-run homer, and Tino Martinez had a two-run double as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox, 6-2, Sunday to complete their first three-game sweep at Fenway Park since June 25-27, 1991.
Randy Keisler, making his major league debut, allowed one run and four hits in five innings as New York won for the ninth time in 11 games and increased its AL East lead to a season-high 8 1/2 games.
Boston, which had only five runs and 21 hits in the series, fell 3 1/2 games behind Cleveland, the AL wild-card leader.
Seattle 8, Minnesota 1--Aaron Sele (14-10) struck out a season-high 10, improving to 13-3 against the Twins by allowing one run and six hits in seven innings at Seattle.
Alex Rodriguez hit a disputed home run for the Mariners, winners of two in a row after losing 18 of 25.
Twin Manager Tom Kelly argued that there was fan interference when right fielder Brian Buchanan jumped for Rodriguez’s ball.
Oakland 11, Tampa Bay 0--Rookie Barry Zito (4-3) pitched a five-hitter to give the Athletics their second consecutive shutout at Oakland.
Toronto 6, Detroit 2--Chris Carpenter (10-11) won his first start in more than two months and Brad Fullmer hit a two-run homer at Toronto.
Kansas City 13, Texas 8--Joe Randa drove in five runs and Mark Quinn had two doubles and two RBIs in the Royals’ victory at Kansas City, Mo.
Chicago at Cleveland, ppd.--The series finale between the Indians and White Sox was postponed by rain. It has not been rescheduled and it may not be played unless it has some bearing on the playoff race.
