Victory Improves Ranking to No. 10

A last-second 17-14 victory over Colorado sufficed to lift the Trojans to No. 10 in the latest Associated Press poll.

Saturday’s victory was sparked by quarterback Carson Palmer, who completed 83% of his passes for 275 yards, and kicker David Newbury, who made the game-winner.

But Coach Paul Hackett said he was impressed by the performance of his offensive line, especially during the 72-yard drive that led to the winning field goal.

“Look at the pass protection,” Hackett said. “That’s what wins when the game is on the line.”

Tailback Sultan McCullough continued to answer questions about his durability Saturday when he gained 91 yards in 28 carries--tying a career high for carries he set against Penn State in the opener.

His 56 carries in the first two games is the highest opening total for USC since Marcus Allen had 62 in 1981.

The Trojans made it through another game relatively unscathed. Cornerback Kris Richard had his knee examined but said after the game that he was healthy. Defensive lineman Lonnie Ford suffered a twisted back.
