American’s Pilots Reject Contract Extension

American Airlines pilots rejected a contract extension that would have lifted limits on regional jets flown by parent AMR Corp.’s commuter arm and forgiven a $45.5-million judgment against their union. The one-year extension was rejected by 65.9% of the votes, American and Allied Pilots Assn. leaders said. The rejection means the current contract, which can be amended as of Aug. 31, 2001, remains in effect. Union officials were not immediately available to comment. The Fort Worth-based company wants to add more regional jets, which are cheaper to fly on short routes. The proposed contract would have lifted the regional jet limit at its American Eagle commuter line. AMR shares finished up 25 cents at $32.38 on the NYSE.
