House OKs $25 Million for Local Ground Water Cleanup

The House of Representatives has approved legislation that would provide $25 million for the San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Initiative, a community-based approach to ground water cleanup.

The funding measure pushed for by Rep. David Dreier (R-San Dimas) passed the House as part of an energy and water appropriations bill. It goes to the Senate, where approval is a formality, Dreier’s office said.

The money would be used as part of a cleanup effort already underway to prevent the spread of perchlorate contamination into the aquifer underneath the San Gabriel Valley. The funding approved this week represents just a small part of the multimillion-dollar effort that will be required.

Funds would also be available to develop a remediation plan for a site in Santa Clarita, according to Dreier’s office.
