Applauding the Honorable

I was encouraged and saddened after reading Gary Phillips’ essay (“Uncertain Territory,” April 1). Phillips offers one glimmer of hope that his children will be able to balance the harsh reality of being a minority and living in a tough neighborhood while reaching out to the surrounding “safer” communities. His family should win the Medal of Honor for trying to be heroic. Sadly, while I wish them the best, the Phillips family cannot do it alone. Busing is only part of the answer. Maybe my generation and my children’s generation can learn something from the Phillips family.
