Coastal Panel to Discuss Restoring Bolsa Chica
The California Coastal Commission will hold a workshop Thursday on plans to restore the Bolsa Chica wetlands, a project that would be the most expensive restoration in state history.
The wetlands were cut off from the ocean more than a century ago by duck hunters; about 60 years ago, the area became an oil field. Today, the 1,200-acre site near Huntington Beach is a patchwork of salt marshes, pools and oil fields.
Federal and state environmental agencies are debating how to return the land to its natural state, including proposals to cut a 360-foot-wide inlet into the coast to reconnect the wetlands and the sea.
The Coastal Commission must rule on whether the $100-million project is consistent with the Coastal Act. A decision is expected this fall.
The workshop will begin at 9 a.m. at the Redondo Beach Historic Library at Veterans Park, 309 Esplanade, Redondo Beach.
