Assemblies of God OK Ministry for Divorcees
In a groundbreaking decision, the General Council of the Assemblies of God this week decided to allow men and women divorced before their Christian conversion to seek ministerial credentials with the denomination.
The approval of a resolution by a 998-834 margin followed discussion that revealed a sharp division on the matter during the biennial meeting that concluded Friday in Kansas City, Mo. The vote was taken by secret ballot.
“Scripture teaches that we are all guilty of breaking the whole law so that no one can put his/her preconversion sins in a separate or lesser category than another,” the resolution reads.
At previous meetings dating to 1983, attempts to change church rules regarding this matter had been rejected.
