As Storms Ease, Divers Resume Work on Kursk
Subsiding storms allowed divers to resume work on the sunken Russian submarine Kursk in preparation for its raising next month, officials said.
Gales at the Barents Sea site forced divers to halt work Sunday. But skies cleared and waters calmed by Monday morning and work resumed, Russian navy spokesman Igor Dygalo said.
Divers focused Monday on clearing out a space between the inner and outer hulls above the third compartment, he said. Divers are cutting holes in the hulls through which cables will be attached to lift the vessel off the sea floor.
The Kursk sank last August, killing all 118 men aboard.
