Tanker Truck Spill Closes Part of Freeway

A tanker trunk traveling north on the Antelope Valley Freeway ruptured Tuesday, spilling 2,200 gallons of gasoline and closing some of the freeway’s northbound lanes for much of the day, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The spill occurred at 11:15 a.m. just north of the Angeles Forest Highway, and sent 500 gallons of gas into a storm drain.

There was a brief threat of fire when the truck hit a guardrail and sent sparks flying, but it was unclear whether the impact caused the leak. No other vehicles were involved, the CHP said. The highway reopened at 7:45 p.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies are monitoring the spill. A Coast Guard spokesman said it may have been far enough from the ocean to be considered a minor threat.
