Brea Advances to Final With Overtime Victory
Adam Thorpe scored in the fifth minute of the first sudden-death overtime Tuesday to give Brea Olinda a 1-0 semifinal victory over top-seeded La Verne Bonita in a Southern Section Division III boys’ soccer game.
In handing Bonita its first loss of the season, fourth-seeded Brea Olinda (26-1-3) moved into the finals Saturday against Santa Barbara.
Keeper Mike Maynard stopped Bonita’s Jeff Meacham on a breakaway, then cleared the ball to a teammate who was fouled. The ensuing free kick by Brett Roth was taken by Chris Becher, who fed the ball to Thorpe, who tapped it in.
In the other Division III semifinal:
Santa Margarita 1, Santa Barbara 1 (Santa Barbara advances on penalty kicks, 5-4)--Santa Barbara goalie Vicente Torres blocked the penalty shot of Joe Speranzo to end the four-year Southern Section title run of Santa Margarita (22-4-3).
In a Division I semifinal game:
Dana Hills 4, Arcadia 0--Stephen Jennings scored three goals and Brendon Huiberts also scored for top-seeded Dana Hills (24-2-3), which plays the winner of today’s Los Alamitos-Long Beach Millikan game in the finals Saturday.
Huiberts opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Jennings then scored consecutive goals in the 35th, 47th and 59th minutes.
In a Division V semifinal game:
Ontario Christian 2, St. Margaret’s 1--Erik Hallenbeck scored in the 12th minute for second-seeded St. Margaret’s (18-5-1), but second-half goals by Brent Vander Eyk and Chris Edwards gave unseeded Ontario Christian (20-6-1) the upset.
